Winter Holiday Traditions
30 minutes · One facilitator · Any group size
Six December moments, from a carol first sung in an Austrian parish church in 1818 to the first Kwanzaa in 1966 and a Hanukkah menorah lit near the White House in 1979. Put the atlas on one screen, or print this card and pass it around the room. Nobody needs an account. Each story has a Listen button that reads it aloud.

Ask everyone: what is the first winter holiday you remember? Where were you, and who was there?
Visit six Decembers · 22 min
- Oberndorf, 1818. Read how Silent Night was first performed. Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber sang it on Christmas Eve, with a guitar. The story that a broken organ forced the composition is unproven. Which carol or holiday song could you still sing from memory?
- Troy, New York, 1823. Open the poem's first printing. A newspaper printed “’Twas the night before Christmas” without a name. Clement Clarke Moore later claimed it, and Henry Livingston's family said he wrote it. Nobody has settled it. Was a poem or story read aloud in your home at this time of year? Who read it?
- London, 1843. Read how A Christmas Carol was published. Dickens paid for it himself, and all 6,000 copies sold out by Christmas Eve, but he made only about £726. Who was the most generous person you knew at the holidays, and what did they do?
- The Western Front, 1914. Open the Christmas truce record. Soldiers heard carols across the lines and met in no man's land. A British general ordered that “on no account is intercourse to be allowed,” and it never happened on that scale again. Did anyone in your family spend a holiday far from home, in service or at work? How did they mark it?
- Los Angeles, 1966. Read how Kwanzaa began. Maulana Karenga created a seven-day celebration of family, community and culture, one principle for each day, which he describes as “cultural recovery and reconstruction.” Which tradition in your family was started by someone you knew?
- Washington, D.C., 1979. Open the first National Menorah record. During Hanukkah, President Jimmy Carter walked from the White House to light a public menorah. Only a few dozen people came, and the lighting became a yearly event. Which lights or candles marked the season in your home?

Ask each person to name one winter tradition they would like to hand on, and one they were glad to let go. If the group meets again in December, ask everyone to bring a photograph or a recipe from a holiday table.
